Creatures of habit we are. We settle into routines. But college is not the place for routine. It’s been quite difficult to establish a routine actually, with so many opportunities and events to take advantage of. But at the same time, I find myself forgetting to branch out from the typical science and engineering classes, from the same friends, and even the same food. In life, I’ve decided to try something totally new, at least every year. This semester, I decided to take a fly-fishing course with a friend. This is something I would never have done on my own. It was a totally new sport for me. I haven’t been fishing since I was very little, and I had never been fly-fishing before this semester.

The course has taught me the basics of fly tying, fly-casting, and aquatic entomology for fly-fishing. We were able to take a few field trips to fisherman’s paradise to try to catch fish with our own flies. This was a very unique experience at Penn State. Even though I was unsuccessful at catching fish, (I still have one more try though!), I really have enjoyed the course. There’s nothing like hanging out with friends by the creek, soaking up the sun, and waiting on the fish to bite. It’s fun! I’ve also learned about how important bugs are, and in turn how important it is to carefully manage the environment to ensure that sensitive species survive, and thus, the fish survive. Now that I’m almost a college graduate, I hope I can spend some more time trying new things and forming some new hobbies!
