Since the Christmas season is upon us, I thought I would write a blog post on an article I recently came across while surfing the Internet. Time Inc., Network posted an article titled “Christmas Lights Could be Slowing Down your Wi-Fi.” According to the new Wi-Fi checker app created by Offcom, Christmas lights do, in fact, affect the speed of an individual’s Wi-Fi. Since the lights put off energy, the signal is blocked slightly. They stated that it would take a considerable amount of lights to affect it in any major way, but the possibility does still lie (Article One).

While on the topic of Christmas lights, I decided to continue with the trend and research more information on this must-have holiday decoration. Christmas lights were invented by Thomas Edison in 1880, in which he hung the string of lights outside the Menlo Park Laboratory for the general public to see. Edward H. Johnson first put lights in a tree in 1882. At first, lights were not socially accepted. They were thought to be dangerous to households and increase the risk of house fires. It was not until President Grover Cleveland began hanging them inside his house that the country began to see the excitement and fun in decorating with them (Article Two).

Press and Guide magazine posted in 2013 that over 80 million homes decorated for the holidays and over 150 million strands of lights were sold (Article Three). The National Retail Federation and BIG Research predicts that over 6 billion dollars will be sold of Christmas decorations just for this Christmas 2015 (Article Four). The first affordable, user-friendly light kit was created by General Electric and compared to today’s economy, lighting a Christmas tree with lights back then would cost around $2000.

To conclude, I was going to wish you a happy holiday and also inform you of the best-decorated house using Christmas lights. After researching this, I realized that almost every town believes they have the best lights display, so I thought I would just add some of my favorites! I hope you enjoyed your time being informed on the fascinating history of something you would not figure to carry so much antiquity.

Enjoy class! It has been a pleasure getting to know everyone throughout the semester. Have a good one!
