I’ve gone to class and yet I’m still in denial about this year. It’s senior year. Granted, I have accepted an integrated undergraduate graduate program and will stay an extra year to pursue my Masters, but it still seemed surreal. Time flew by!
I still remember my first days at Penn State vividly. I had just finished Orion, a hiking program offered to first year students, and was nervous and excited about meeting my roommate, going to classes, and college in general. After a few days, I made some friends, met my professors, and was in love with Penn State.
It’s been three years and I’m still in love. I will be staying an extra year, but part of what has made my Penn State experience so rich was the people I was with. PLA Zeta class, that means you too! As our final year together grows closer, I can only hope that we get to spend more time together. That’s make our last year together our best year together!
Finally, I’m still in denial about my current situation career wise. While I do have options, it stings that my dream job might have to wait. The oil and gas industry has taken quite a tumble in the past two years and some expect it to stay down for the next year or two. I was lucky enough to double major and gain experience in another field by teaching and tutoring Spanish, so I know that I am safe in that regard, but it still pains me to think that I won’t be able to pursue something that I’ve worked so hard on.
I hate to end this blog on that note, but at the end of the day, that is the true reason one goes to college–for an education that leads to a career. My friends and college life are amazing, and I could not have asked for it to turn out better in that regard, but I must also look at the future with a healthy dose of skepticism.
If you are really passionate about the oil and gas industry I doubt you should let a slump in the industry stop you from pursuing a career in it. The wisest companies often invest at a greater rate during difficult times so that they can secure and accelerate the earnings and performance when the trend improves. If you keep your eye out, I’m sure you will find what you are looking for! Wish you the best Gaby!
