Today was the National Council of Negro Women’e first annual induction ceremony. I am the president this year and decided that the process for becoming a general body member. Before, you’d just send in money to our second vice president and the money would be sent to the national chapter. This year, we decided to celebrate the ladies a little more. We decided to have an entire ceremony dedicated to our new members. This attempt to celebrate the new members would serve as an incentive for others who want to be involved but were on the lines.

The program started with us addressing the history of the national organization. It was founded on December 5th, 1935 by Mary McLeod Bethune. The history of the local branch was founded by Sheryl and Kierra. They were juniors when they first started, and noticed a lack of cohesion among black women on campus.  They then looked to the NCNW chapter at Temple’s campus as inspiration and bought it here! Following, we announced the new members, their majors and interests. We then gifted them with a pink scarf (our org’s main color) and a certificate stating that they were new members. This, I’m sure, helped us accomplish our goal of celebrating the members and making them feel special.

The event was a success and bought in a huge crowd. Hopefully this tradition stays and gets bigger and better each year.
