I am sure many of you are familiar with the Kardashian family, mainly Kim, Khloe, Kourtney, Kendall, and Kylie, yes I agree, that is definitely a mouthful. The Kardashian family is most famous for their widely popular television series “Keeping up with the Kardashians” and the sisters various clothing, makeup, and skincare line. While it is certainly easy to glamorize their lavish lifestyle, as I am definitely guilty of, I have come to realize their family gets away with all too much because of their inherent popularity. That being said I made a decision a few months ago to unfollow all of them on social media. While this certainly does not merit a pat on the back or anything like that, I just found it important to myself to distance myself form the toxic culture their family has continually represents.

More specifically, Kim, Kylie, and Khloe have all been rightfully called out for appropriating black culture on multiple occasions. While they have posted public “apologies” and claim to understand the severity of their actions, they still continue to mimic black culture time and time again.

For example, Khloe attended a Diana Roos 75th birthday celebration and tried to fit the theme of the disco era. While that is harmless her chosen hairstyle was particularly distasteful. In the image below you can clearly tell she has chosen to wear a wig that is identical to the texture of many black women’s hair with tight voluminous curls.

Kim has had countless instances of appropriating black culture. there are actually a slew of websites that give detailed timelines with images of all these scenarios, For example, Kim attended the MTV movie awards with a full head of fulani braids or also known as corn rows. These braids were made popular by black women and is specifically tailored to protect their hair from damage. There is also a lot of history with this hairstyle, where in the past black women would have to braid their hair in a specific pattern that would later serve as maps to escape slavery. The image of Kim is pictured below.

Lastly, Kylie Jenner did a photoshoot for her new makeup line where her hair was braided into blonde twists. This once again is a hairstyle specific to black women that they utilize to protect their hair from damage. The image of Kylie Jenner is below.
