My name is Marcus Spiller and I’m currently on the executive board as the fundraising director for the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. This is where I explore, write, and present compelling funding proposals to various businesses to raise funds. I also organize fundraising opportunities and events within the community to benefit the chapter. One of the biggest things I’ve been working on this semester was designing and selling merchandise. Overall, we have made half of what we bought it for and are still continuing to sell. We have hoodies, sweatpants, and tote bags. If you are interested in supporting our chapter and looking fresh, please let me know hahaha.

Anyway, last week we traveled to our National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina. This is where 40+ students get the opportunity to speak to company recruiters to enhance their professional portfolios. Out of this experience, they can get an interview with a company such as Merck, Johnson & Johnson, Amazon, and hundreds of other companies. I was able to get 2 interviews out of this convention and also made connections with companies such as Tesla, Lockheed Martin, and Disney Imagineers.

During this convention, there are also a lot of workshops, presentations, and even competitions. I went to a resume workshop hosted by Tesla where I got to network with interns and recruiters from the company. The presentations were really well such as meeting the first Latino woman to have gone to space, what it means to be Hispanic in STEM, and other company showcases. One of my favorite parts of this trip was the STEM competition. The challenge was in cyber security where my coding experience was little to none. However, the team I was assigned to taught me a lot in the few hours that we worked together and we ended up placing third. Our team then met up later for some pizza. Overall, this trip allowed me to thrive professionally, socially, and academically, and I cannot wait to go on the one next year, Hopefully, I can get a job offer in the upcoming weeks.
