With Microsoft’s recent acquisition of OpenAI, they’ve begun to integrate its flagship service, ChatGPT, with their existing search engine, Bing. For the last couple decades, Google has completely dominated the search space but this new breakthrough has Google on Microsoft’s heels with their announcement of a similar chat tool, Bard. Google recognizes the importance of natural language processing in search and is working to keep up with the competition but as shown by their recent reveal, they’re still not prepared.

In their demo, Bard produced an inaccurate response which prompted many to believe that Microsoft may soon have a chance to dethrone Google. Google still has some significant advantages over Bing. For one, Google has a significantly larger market share. According to Statista, as of January 2022, Google held a 92.2% share of the global search engine market, while Bing had just a 2.6% share. This means that Google is still the default choice for many users and it will continue to stay that way as they have a massive amount of data at its disposal, which it uses to improve its search results. This includes data from its search engine, as well as data from other products like Google Maps and YouTube. This gives Google a more comprehensive view of user behavior and intent, which allows it to deliver more personalized and accurate search results. Microsoft has made some impressive strides with their integration of ChatGPT with Bing but Google is still the dominant player in the space. Time will tell if Bing can make significant inroads and become a serious challenger to Google’s throne.
