Hope everyone had a restful spring break! Although I’m so sad to have missed the Boston trip, I’m excited to share about my time in New York City. Since this was my last spring break before graduating and entering the workforce, I wanted to spend some time traveling with my family before leaving.

I am so privileged and lucky to have paid for a trip for me and my mom to spend a few days in Times Square. Our priorities were broadway, food, and shopping! My mom is a super big broadway fan of many older shows such as Phantom of the Opera and Cats. Somehow she’s never actually seen a show and it was time to change that. We chose to watch Moulin Rouge and both went in with minimal background knowledge. It was awesome! I’ve seen a couple of shows before but I loved that this one incorporated well-known pop songs and made it relevant to the plot and setting.

Leading up to the trip, I also did extensive research and consulted with friends from NYC about food places to try. The only request from my mom was that she wanted to eat good dim sum. It was perfect timing because Din Tai Fung had just opened a location in the city and just a two minute walk from our hotel! We also tried a Southern Thai place called Cha Long with arguably the best pad thai I’ve ever had. For dinner we visited Marseille, a fancy french cuisine restaurant and we had breakfast and coffee the next morning at Angelina’s Bakery and Ground Central Coffee.

One of my favorite aspects of eating in the city is the view while dining. For example, in grabbing coffee at the cafe, we got to enjoy the beautiful sun while watching the morning work rush go by. It’s fun to hear all the different languages spoken by passerbys and the variety of outfits people wear–it makes a fun game of guessing their professions!

Beyond the food, my mom and I also had the chance to shop and visit the Museum of Modern Arts–where we got to see Van Gogh’s Starry Night. Overall, it was an awesome trip where I spent quality time with my mom to chat about everything and anything while traversing a new city environment.
