This weekend, I had the privilege of attending a materials Science and Engineering conference called MS&T. This was my first scientific conference, and it definitely was not what I was expecting. It was a whirlwind of events, talks, and unforgettable memories. We left about 6 hours after the disappointing White Out game, leaving for Columbus, Ohio. After about 6 hours, we finally got to the convention center, where our first event was an hour after we arrived. Each talk was more interesting than the last, regardless of the fact that we had all gotten about 3 hours of sleep. We were able to explore to city throughout the conference, and see so many interesting people.
One of the most notable topics I had listened to was using graphite nanoparticle to improve shock resistance. This was an absolutely mind blowing topic, since the applications of this could be global. Almost every place on Earth gets hit with some type of shock, ranging from rain to earthquakes. Being able to improve to quality of building materials for more sensitive strictures would be amazing for future societal improvement. Along with this, the way that the speaker had presented the topic was in a very manageable way. This was one of the best talks I had saw at the conference because of this many of the other talks were of very complex topics with an implied background needed to understand what as happening. This made it very hard to understand what they were implying during their talks, and very difficult to fully understand their talks as a whole.
I hope that in the future, I would be able to go back and give one of these talks, in hopes hat I would be able to present myself in a way that is just as manageable as some of these other talks. I hope that people would be able to understand my topic and give me some ideas as to how to move forward. Overall, this experience was very rewarding, and I hope to continue my research exposure experience at later conferences as well.
