How much does it really cost to be happy?

This question is something I think about often, usually paired with thoughts about college debt or hourly wage at my next place of employment. However recently the answer became extremely clear to me.

Two days ago I checked my wallet and I had one ten dollar bill, I didn’t feel so great about it. But a couple of my buddies and I decided to grab some 5 Guys burgers and fries for lunch. As I took a bite of that succulent, and juicy bacon cheeseburger, everything in my life fell into place. The flavors flooded both my taste buds and my soul. My heart rate increased and I started to sweat from the great enjoyment that burger gave me (or from the weeks worth of calories my body needed to digest).  I could do nothing but close my eyes and smile in extacy. At that very moment I was happy. Later when I looked in my wallet again I still had a couple ones in there. So I may argue that happiness costs less than ten dollars.

Then yesterday I was walking down College Avenue while there was an extreme amount of festivities going on music, school spirit, singing dancing. I walked down that packed sidewalk and just soaked it all in. So much spirit and liveliness. It was great. On my walk I said hello to a passerby and she replied with an enthusiastic “Hello!” I immediately whip out and glance inside, and right there are those same few dollar bills that I had the preceding night.

So the type of happiness you get from bacon and beef falling in love with your tongue costs a mere six dollars.

The type of happiness that simply manifests inside of you and builds in your soul that can leave life long memories to reminisce on forever, well… those are free.

Like I said I am a college student in debt so I will always choose the free option. Happiness does not cost a single dollar.
