Most weekends I spend catching up on homework and binge-watching football, but this weekend was a pleasant change of pace for me in two ways. Firstly, my mom came to visit me. She is a sucker for all the family weekend activities, and even though my whole family experienced it last year, she insisted on returning this year (while my dad, brothers and sister did not, which I understand). We tried to change it up from last time, and to my surprise I really enjoyed attending the women’s ice hockey game. There were multiple instances of high-speed collisions and impressive goals which made it very entertaining to watch. The atmosphere of Pegula was also exciting with the loud horns and music. Another activity I enjoyed was visiting the Palmer Art Museum. It was my first time inside the new building, and I appreciated the more modern style. The art was great too of course. Most importantly, I got to spend much-needed quality time with my mom and catch up on how my family was doing back home (and vice versa). Without going into the specifics, they’ve been doing well. It’s easy to forget about these things when I’m so focused on what’s going on in my life. This served as a reminder that I need to make more of an effort to keep in touch with my family.

The other notable thing I did this weekend was run in the THON 5k. The reason it stuck to me is because reaching the finish line was much more of a struggle than I had thought it would be. Playing sports in high school kept me in shape whether I liked it or not, but now that I no longer have that to hold me accountable, I’ve not been keeping up. Like with my family, I’ve put my physical health on the backburner to prioritize schoolwork and other responsibilities. There are plenty of resources here on campus that I can take advantage of to maintain my physical health, so that hopefully I can return to the 5k next year with much more confidence. Ultimately, this weekend served as a reminder to maintain a balanced lifestyle that includes time for not only school and friends, but also my family, my health, and hobbies. It was a refreshing change of pace and something I will keep in mind moving forward with this semester.
