My mom has always drilled into my head that everything in this life has a beginning and an end. For some reason, I began to think that college was an exception to that rule. It really seems like yesterday that my parents and I took a US Airways flight out of our 32 square mile island and arrived at my dorm in Pennypacker Hall.
Though I have managed to stay on track and accomplish various academic and professional goals, I realized I have a bit of work to do in the self-kindness department. After speaking with various mentors and people I admire, I have learned that high achieving people tend to neglect themselves and often end up suffering mentally and physically as a result.
I can certainly attest to this fact, seeing as last year I ended up in the hospital and visited various clinics due to stress. Reminiscing on my past schedule, I scheduled time for everything and everyone except myself. Now that I am in my final year, I have vowed to take time to relax and focus on myself and my growth.
One of the ways I am pursuing this self-kindness is through the creation of a vision board. According to the popular book The Secret, “The law of attraction is forming your entire life experience and it is doing that through your thoughts. When you are visualizing, you are emitting a powerful frequency out into the Universe.” This is exactly what a vision board does. It is a culmination of your thoughts, feelings, and desires shaped into a physical collage. I have already begun creating my vision board that I will place in a central location in my room so that everyday I can be comforted by my dreams and vision for my future.
I encourage anyone reading this blog to create a vision board. If you can’t see it, how will you achieve it? You are your most important asset, so be sure to take time to look after yourself and figure out what you want out of life.
Yes to all of this. Self-care and self-kindness is so important, and I’m glad you’re trying to make yourself a priority this year. My mom always says to do something that makes you happy every day, and I try to live by that rule. Also, I love your vision board idea. When I was looking at graduate schools last year, I made a vision board, and everything worked out for me! — Maddie
