Philadelphia Record Newspaper Strike, 1946- 1947

Jerry Doyle, editorial cartoonist for the Philadelphia Record, joins his fellow co-workers on the picket line outside the Record office building in early 1947.  The months-long strike was bitter, and the resulting stalemate led the Record’s publisher, J. David Stern, to sell the newspaper to the rival Philadelphia Inquirer. Doyle free-lanced for the next five years, contributing his cartoons to many leading magazines—ColliersTimeLife, and Country Gentleman—before joining the Philadelphia Daily News in 1952.   Lena Hyena of Lower Slobovia, was a cartoon character created and referenced by cartoonist Al Capp in his popular comic strip, Li’l Abner in 1946.   Described as hideous and frightening (Capp never drew her), all who gazed upon her went insane.

Jerry Doyle poses with his created design, gracing his favorite Philadelphia pub.  He enjoyed joining his press colleagues and fellow editorial cartoonists from other major Philadelphia dailies in a round or two following long workdays,or to celebrate professional awards and milestones.

Inspiring the Next Generation of Editorial Cartoonists (circa 1950s)

Jerry Doyle enjoyed sharing his profession with the public, and engaged in a variety of outreach activities to de-mystify the process of producing daily editorial cartoons for a major daily newspaper. In addition to frequent visits to the Philadelphia area schools, he also taught evening drawing classes at Saint Joseph’s University and Temple University as a Professor of Practice. He understood that the editorial cartoonist functioned as both a visual journalist and educator in documenting current issues and events.

As an Irish-Catholic and product of Philadelphia’s catholic schools, Doyle believed in the social gospel and active community service.  Here he applied his artistic skills in support of the Philadelphia Diocese Catholic Charities Drive.
