Environmentalism
Contained within Jerry Doyle’s extensive portfolio are representative cartoon panels devoted to various environmental issues—air and water pollution, industrial and chemical hazards, nuclear waste material, and toxic landfill sites. An avid oil painter of landscapes, Doyle loved the natural beauty of the surrounding Delaware Valley and the Delaware River. As a Pennsylvanian, he was familiar with Rachel Carson’s environmental manifesto, Silent Spring, the tragic air inversion over Donora, and Three Mile Island. During his lifetime in Philadelphia, he remembered the numerous oil and gas refinery fires and explosions associated with Marcus Hook and the pollution caused by the region’s vast complex of chemical factories, munitions plants, and naval shipyards. His cartoon panels encapsulate the dilemma of balancing modern industrial development and preserving the environment for the well-being of present and future generations.
