November 10, 2020 at 10am ET – Thematic analyses of Hi. Ed. asynchronous, pedagogical issues, as seen through the lens of online teachers. Is the absence of Teaching Presence the main contributor? – Dr. Mansoor Bhatty
Dr. Bhatty’s dissertation, defended April 2020, was titled: “Impact of Teaching Presence (TP) on learning outcomes. A qualitative study of perceptions through the lens of online teachers.” The dissertation found scores of pedagogical issues, categorized under different themes, being faced by the online asynchronous teachers, and their lack of understanding the teaching presence concepts was hindering their efforts to overcome these issues. The research led to a deliverable, a teaching presence checklist, that can guide new online teachers to create/sustain/maximize teaching presence during the entire course, covering all the three TP elements: Course design & organization; Facilitated discourse; Direct instructions.
