Our unit encourages professional development! There are multiple professional development opportunities within Outreach and on campus. You are also encouraged to attend local, regional, and national conferences related to advising.
The following professional development activities are required:
- Penn State Orientation
- Outreach Orientation
- Mastering Supervision: The Supervision Series
- Child Sexual Abuse Training: As a Penn State employee, you are a mandated reporter. You are required to complete Child Sexual Abuse Training.
The following professional development activities are recommended:
- Topic Talks
- Strategic Planning sessions and updates
- A Day in the Life: The Penn State Community at Work: Workplace Responses to Domestic Violence Training
- Policy AD85 – Sexual and/or Gender-based Harrassment and Misconduct (Including sexual harassment, Sexual Assault, Dating Violence, Domestic Violence, Stalking and Related Inappropriate Conduct.
- The Center for Workplace Learning and Performance (CWLP) provides professional development opportunities for Penn State faculty and staff. There are staff and faculty learning opportunities in the form of workshops, seminars, and programs for technology training. The Health Matters section offers programs to help employees improved their spiritual, intellectual, physical, emotional, social and occupational wellness.
- Joining professional organizations and attending local, regional, and national conferences related to advising, such as the following:
- DUS Advising Conference
- Hendricks Conference
- Outreach Annual Gathering
Your supervisor will explain these in more detail.
After attending a conference or professional development session, advisers are required to report information to the Academic Advising and Student Disability Services (AA&SDS) team. You may report on any topic you found interesting. These reports can be verbal reports at the adviser-to-adviser meeting, or you may share your notes. You are encouraged to include attachments and websites so advisers are able to locate additional information.
Identify a Seminar or Workshop that interests you through the Center for Workplace Learning and Performance. Discuss your selection with your supervisor.
Register the New Penn State Employee Orientation—Center for Workplace Learning and Performance.
Complete the Reporting Child Abuse Training through Skillport. You will need to login with your access account to locate the training module.
