As academic advisers we have many roles such as to assist students navigate the Penn State system, to aid students in understanding policies and procedures, and to refer students to support services such as tutoring and career services.

However, the majority of our time is spent assisting students in identifying academic plans and selecting courses. We complete Academic Reviews in Starfish to ensure students have selected appropriate courses for the upcoming semester. These reviews are completed near the end of each semester. Academic Reviews gives the adviser an opportunity to provide registered and scheduled students an assessment of their progress and to identify potential advising issues.
