An elderly couple of a man and a woman embraces while wearing masks and separated by a sheet of plastic. The plastic sheet has glove-like inserts so that they can wrap their arms around each other. They also "kiss" through the plastic and masks.

The news as of late seems to be full of images like this. And to think – a year ago, none of them would have made sense.

This photograph was taken in July, 102 days after visitors were restricted from entering a nursing home in Spain. The couple, Agustina Cañamero and Pascual Pérez, had not seen each other during this time and were elated to greet each other, this time through a plastic screen.

To me, though context is helpful, this image transcends words through the emotion pictured.

Additionally, it serves as a perfect argument to practice compassion in these difficult times.

Perhaps the most noticeable feature of this photo is the extra layering, or PPE, that both subjects are wearing. The masks on their faces, now an integral part of our lives, are also a symbol for something more. Their use is scientifically proven to protect the wearer to some extent and those in the surrounding area. By wearing a mask, one can protect an exponential number of people from spread of COVID-19. With both people in this photo wearing a mask, they are symbolizing this act of kindness. Provided by the facility is a plastic barrier with hand slots for visitors to embrace a resident. The combination of these allows a moment that they may have previously found impossible.

Also represented in this photograph is fear and relief from it. Surely in these times, everyone has been gripped with some uneasiness about what lies ahead. For someone living in a nursing home, this is no different. To have a loved one in a frightening situation like this is also reason for these concerns. In this moment, this couple is able to greet each other safely and the comfort in knowing this is shown on their faces.

Lastly, this image exemplifies a feeling of love. The couple hugs and kisses tightly, despite the barriers in front of them. According to an article about this event, this went on for minutes. Joy and relief are visible on their faces and in their demeanor. The camera angle completely captures a moment of strong emotion. It brings those who see it, even just for a second, into the shoes of other people impacted by the pandemic.

When I first saw this picture, I found it incredibly jarring and grounding. As cases rise around the United States, and in nursing homes in my community, I find solace and peace in news like this. I think we all need these reminders of love in the world, and that even if it feels far off, it will return soon.
