Trayvon Martin was a seventeen-year old African American male who was shot on February 26, 2012. Trayvon went to 7/11 to buy snacks and began his walk home to his development. He was wearing a hoodie, sweats and sneakers and it was raining outside. As Trayvon approached his development, the neighborhood watchman, George Zimmerman grew suspicious of the boy and decided to call 911. He described him as a black male who looked as if he was on drugs. The dispatcher told Zimmerman to not follow Trayvon, however he continued to. Trayvon turned around and asked if there was a problem and punched Zimmerman. Zimmerman then pulled out his handgun and opened fire on Trayvon Martin.

This case is overall very controversial since Trayvon is not alive to speak his side of the story. The police are only relying on what Zimmerman has to say. Zimmerman says he used self-defense in order to protect himself which could be true however in a clip of the documentary, it shows Zimmerman calling the police on several other African Americans who he thought looked suspicious but were innocent. It is clear to me George Zimmerman was racially profiling these innocent people.

Also, in this documentary, they were showing pictures of Trayvon that made him look suspicious and a kid who is not innocent. They portrayed him in hoodies and rebellious. In the film they even said he had a two-week suspension from school because he was in possession of marijuana. Throughout the film they made it seem light-hearted on Zimmerman’s part and made him seem not like the bad guy. They portrayed him in a way to make him look innocent. When he got called to be interviewed at the police station, the police even let him go at 12 and let him come back the next day with no hand cuffs or even an escort. This just shows that they were already believing Zimmerman and not even waiting to learn more about Travyon’s side. Trayvon’s lawyer Benjamin Crump even said if this was a white boy who was killed, everyone would be all over this.

Social media was blowing up when this incident happened. People were tweeting that it was disgusting Zimmerman got off the hook with no charges. An innocent boy was killed. I think it is ridiculous that no charges were pressed after the murder of an innocent boy. A quote in the movie said, “George Zimmerman had a 9-millimeter gun in one hand and Trayvon had a bag of skittles in his hand.” This even sounds ridiculous hearing someone say that. I do not get out Trayvon could have been a threat to Zimmerman if he was just holding a pack of skittles. Overall, I believe that Zimmerman should have been convicted of the crime. I am thankful though that Trayvon’s story and message has had a great impact on society and all over social media because it was a huge wake up call for the nation and for all to hear about it.
