My First-Year Goals

Practicing better organization habits!

College for me is a time for opportunity, and throughout my years here I want to both create a pathway for success in my future and enjoy the limited time here to the fullest. I greatly enjoyed my high school experience through friends and various activities, and I want to further continue this trend throughout high school. I always look forward to meeting new people and creating strong connections with them, as interacting with others is one of the most impactful aspects of human life. Creating new experiences and growing with those around me have shaped me into the person I am today. However, academically, I definitely intend to learn more about my selected major. I really look forward to figuring out what is best suited for me, and whether or not I made the correct choice when it comes to my major- if not, I intend to thoroughly consider and evaluate all of the other choices that surround me here at Penn State. That being said, my academic career is also the main reason for my stress and anxiety. Staying on top of deadlines was something I struggled with in high school, as well as managing my workload. I either don’t spend enough time on assignments or spend too much time on them. I want to work on finding out a healthy balance between the two through my summer classes so I will have good habits for the fall semester.

I want to have the best experience I can for college, and with this, I should definitely consider what I did wrong in high school. Often I would get extremely stressed, causing me to ultimately get no work done as I felt I had to spend the whole day destressing. This is not advantageous in any way, and I should find strategies to substitute this habit with. As well as this, I found myself not wanting to get out of bed, which would cause me to turn down friends when they wanted to spend time together. I always wanted to go out, but couldn’t find the energy to get ready for the day. In college, I want to be better at communicating with those around me and go out more often when I know it will be good for me. Going out is something I very much enjoy doing, and I know forcing myself to go out will be beneficial for me. That being said, I want to get involved with many opportunities within Penn State which will further counteract my bad habits. I look forward to doing intramural sports, though I haven’t chosen which sport I want to get involved with yet- most likely volleyball or tennis. I also want to become associated with the community within the College of Agricultural Sciences. I think this will be so beneficial to both my present and future as I grow connections and obtain more knowledge.

There is so much I want to accomplish at college, and to do so I will have to make a multitude of goals I abide by. For my first semester, my main goal is to stay on top of grades, prioritizing staying consistent with decent grades. I hope to end the school year with all A’s and B’s (with maybe room for 1 or 2 C’s if needed). For my first year, this is the time frame where I hope to get involved. I want to attend a lot of events and meet a variety of people, and I’ll try to accomplish this by talking to the people within both my classes and dorm. Lastly, by the end of my fourth year, my goal is to do at least 2 internships. These will be so helpful for my future as well as for me as a person.

After taking the time to type everything out, I’m not sure if I feel more organized or overwhelmed. However, I plan to take things one day at a time and first focus on my first semester goals. I look forward to what the future holds in store for me!
