Pixel Pattern Maker

Have fun in the matrix.

Create and interpret colorful 7×7 pixel patterns to explore how AI and humans see images differently.

Overview

Welcome to the Pixel Pattern Maker activity

Turn simple colors into pixel art patterns using the RGB light wall!
In this experience, you’ll explore how AI and humans see patterns differently.

Skills Learned

  • Visual pattern recognition
  • Translating digital patterns into physical design

Specs:

  • Est. time: 3-5 min.
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Tools Used: Govee Light App, Pattern Pixel Maker Custom GPT

Get Set Up

1. Open the Govee RGB Light app
This controls the physical light panels. Find it in the iPad dock — its icon looks like:

2. Select a light panel to work with (left or right)

3. Select the panel’s Finger Sketch mode for this activity

Using Pixel Pattern Maker

You’ll use the Pattern Pixel Maker Custom GPT to create a 7 × 7 color pattern.

Modes you can try:

  • 🎲 Random – AI creates a surprise pattern.

  • 🎨 Suggest – You tell AI what to make.

  • Guess – Try to identify a hidden shape.

  • 🛠️ Build – AI names an object, and you recreate it.

Action

  1. Open Pixel Pattern Maker in a new tab
  2. Click one of the mode buttons to create a 7x7 pattern.
  3. Once your pattern appears return here to this tab and continue.

Recreate Your Pattern

When you are done working with the Pixel Pattern Maker CustomGPT you will have a 7×7 color grid which will look similar to this.

Set the fill color for each square in the Govee app’s light grid to the corresponding 7×7 grid square’s color.

Observe and Reflect

Step back and look at the design.

  • Can you see a shape or image that the AI didn’t describe?
  • How did your mind fill in the blanks or add meaning when adding the colours?

This where AI and humans differ — AI arranges pixels by logic, but you bring imagination, emotion, and story to what you see.
