Synopsis:

The machine learning models used in data-driven decision-making applications can be subject to different sources of bias that result in social injustice. Several algorithmic approaches have been proposed to build models that do not discriminate against people from sensitive groups. In this talk, we will review examples of AI applications in which fairness is an important concern (e.g., credit scoring, college admission, hiring decisions, criminal justice). Then, we will present quantitative strategies to mitigate biases and ensure accurate and fair machine learning models.

Speaker:

Tommaso Giovannelli is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) at Lehigh University.  He received his Ph.D. in Operations Research in May 2021 from Sapienza University of Rome. From January 2020 to May 2021, he stayed at Lehigh ISE as a visiting scholar. In July 2019, he won a doctoral award at the Doctoral Consortium ORAHS 2019, Karlsruhe, Germany, for his research in simulation-based optimization applied to emergency department management. His research interests include nonlinear optimization, stochastic bilevel and multi-objective optimization, and simulation-based and derivative-free optimization. His main application areas concern machine learning, transportation systems, and healthcare management.
