Hello Everyone! Once again, here is another blog post from yours truly on the great foods of Penn State restaurants downtown. Today, we will be reviewing the D.P. Dough. A simple, cheap “pizza” restaurant located in 401 E Beaver Avenue, the place is known to serve calzones, wings, and breadsticks. However, another popular aspect of this dine in, takeout, delivery option eatery is how late they open till from 11am to 2pm. When entering inside, a menu is displayed revealing various types of calzones (which I didn’t even know existed) such as the BBQ Steak Zone, Buffer Zone, Cheeseburg Zone, etc.
Two weeks ago, my friend and I decided to grab a quick bite to eat for lunch before heading off to our classes. Admittedly, we first wanted to go to Sower’s Harvest Cafe but found it to have a long queue to which we decided to look at D.P. Dough as we craved for something warm. Walking inside, there was a man standing at the counter with small chairs and tables inside the restaurant. The kitchen was visible from the customer’s perspective and we managed to see a stack of barbecue cups in a neat triangle.
When ordering something, I couldn’t decide on what food to pick as there was so many options to choose from! All of them seemed delicious from savory bone wings covered in sweet or spicy sauce to the Cheese Stix coated in baked mozzarella. I noticed that a star was next to the BBQ Chicken Zone which was a calzone consisting of breaded chicken, bacon, cheddar, and bacon sauce — a popular dish. Along with that, I also added in garlic bread with tomato sauce as dipping while my friend ordered the Italian Zone — Pepperoni, Mozzarella, Parmesan, and Ricotta.
Throughout the process, the cashier was a friendly, middle-aged man who greeted us with kind smiles and easily helped us pay. Once we sat down at a nearby table, it took about possibly 20 to 30 minutes until a kind woman brought over our meals in a cardboard box as easy takeout. My mouth was watering at the distinctive smell as I didn’t eat breakfast that morning and immediately started to chow down. The first thing I felt at the tip of my tongue was the hot sensation of the calzone against my taste buds. It was searing at first but I was so enamored by the mix of cheese and bacon combined that I kept scarfing down the bread like a Medieval child during the Black Plague. The breadsticks were equally as amazing too as the soft dough breaded so well with the garlic powder. Dipping it into the red sauce made the flavor enhance while I finished the rest of the calzone.
The portion for me was too big as I couldn’t finished the garlic sticks. We still wanted it to be a takeout and brought it home to store it in the freezer. Next day, I microwaved it and it tasted just the same — warm and soft. Overall, I would give this place a 9/10 rating. I really liked the dishes that we got and the overall taste and service of the restaurant was great.
I was waiting for this one. D.P Dough is a staple in my weekend, my personal favorite is the buffalo chicken, you should definitely give it a try! I would have to say the atmosphere is definitely different at night on the weekends. I have been screamed at for taking too long to order and told I had a spider on my hand when there was none… Very odd. I have taken more of a liking to College Pizza recently. However, I definitely have to try it during the day to get a better experience, I am excited that you had such a good experience and am hoping I can say the same next time.
