RCL 2: vaccinations

Joe Biden receives second dose of COVID-19 vaccine on camera - ABC7 San FranciscoElvis Presley Set an Example by Getting his Polio Vaccination | The National Endowment for the Humanities

Both artifacts deal with vaccines and trying to promote them to the public. Both of these artifacts were on live television, and Biden’s vaccination took place during January of this year and Elvis’s vaccination took place on the Ed Sullivan show in 1956.The Ed Sullivan show was popular for its day, but Elvis was as famous as can be.

The relevance of the topic of vaccines are pretty obvious in todays world concerning Covid. Back in the 1950s the polio vaccine was trying to be administered to as many people as possible, but due to fear and misunderstandings concerning the polio vaccine there was a lot of hesitant people. However, after the king of pop himself got it and showed support people were lining up to get the shot. In today’s world the president is trying to accomplish the same feat concerning the Covid vaccine. Biden getting the vaccine on live TV is supposed to show the public that he trusts the vaccine, and many other politicians and modern celebrities have followed suit. This subject of how people in media affects the actions and thoughts of the public interest me, and the artifacts presented are another example of that. Both figures are very influential in many ways, and whenever they show themselves promoting something it will have an obvious impact on their fans and the general public. While the people getting the vaccine helps to show support for vaccines and encourages people to get it, the people getting it does not help to dispel misinformation concerning the vaccines they were getting. That is left to medical professionals, but the people publicly showing their support helps the public to also get vaccinated. These artifacts raises a couple of interesting questions concerning just how much power celebrities have over their audience, and these celebrities can play an important part in advancing a cause or product or both. While I think that that kind of power should really only be reserved to certain professionals on the subjects their talking about, I know that despite what I think figures in media will continue to have an overwhelming presence on many topics. While in cases like the ones my artifacts are showing the cause the figures are promoting are just and good it should raise concern that it does not refute the arguments against the vaccines directly, but it does help to complete their intended purpose for getting publicly vaccinated(to raise vaccination rates).

  1. Hey Zappa,
I like how the artifact you choose, I think it really shows us how the public figure can affect public thoughts. If they use their influence in a way like this will for sure make society more peaceful.
