RCL4: Anti-American Biden?!

Amazon.com: Pro America Anti Biden Political Bumper Sticker / 2020 Trump Republican Candidate Bumper Decal Sticker : Automotive

This ad is seemingly a pro Trump bumper sticker because it is saying Biden is not advocating American values. The ad is giving the implication that Biden is not for America and that Trump is for America in terms of policy and nature assumingly. The argument for this bumper sticker is not well developed in terms of the face value of the bumper sticker. The sticker is just implying that Biden is anti American and that Trump is. The argument can be made that Biden is “anti American” in terms that he is restricting rights to try and help relief the corona virus. In addition, Biden can be seen as trying to take power from the “people” when his policies are looked at in certain lights. Republicans will often make the argument that Biden is reducing speech rights, reducing gun rights, and overall reducing individual rights. All of these points can be debated and have been debated between the two parties, but I do not think this bumper sticker is effective in terms of persuasion. The bumper sticker is not listing any effective arguments, and instead I think that the ad is stroking the ego of Republicans. I say that it is stroking the ego of Republicans because it is saying Trump is patriotic and Biden is not without stating anything that would really make Democrats question their stance. Democrats most likely just think that the inverse is true about Trump being anti America, but they probably think so for other reasons. In addition, one needs to ask what are the values of being American or what traits are associated with it. Of course, the answers vary between all kinds of people, but there will be a good amount of reoccurring answers. Some American traits may include but are not limited to: freedom, individuality, equality, innovation, and diversity. As I already stated, these traits are up for debate, but people also debate whether the politicians they support(or oppose) hold these values. The bumper sticker is used to stroke the ego of the pro trump voters, but the bumper sticker can (with a deeper questioning and understanding of politics) be an invite into an internal debate that revolves around questioning whether your politician does exhibit or have American qualities.

  1. This is definitely an effective bumper sticker. It gets straight to the point and people who see it can clearly tell which side of the political spectrum the owner falls on. While it doesn’t provide any specific information, it is clear where this person stands in terms of their liking for President Biden.

  2. I agree that this bumper sticker is effective in its message. I also agree that it’s interesting that republicans tend to argue that democrats are anti-American and taking power from people when they do things that are meant to keep the general population safe, such as masks or gun laws.

  3. Hi, Anthony. I agree that this bumper sticker is not effective in terms of persuasion because it does not offer any objective reasoning for why one must be pro-American AND anti-Biden. Also, because it is so concise, it leaves a lot for the audience to assume. For example, the bumper sticker never explicitly states that the owner is pro-Trump. Theoretically, they could be Independent instead of Republican. However, with any background knowledge of American politics, the audience can assume the beliefs behind the bumper sticker.

  4. This bumper sticker is super effective I know the EXACT type of person that drives this car. It is very clear in its message that if you are a democrat you somehow hate America now as to how they seem to deduce this I have no clue. I also liked how you were able to dive into the policies of Biden and Trump in order to make an argument for the person with this sticker and describe why the person would think this way.
