The context behind the photo is that the church and nuns were housing and caring for refugees, and these two fighters gave flowers as a thank you gift.

First, the photo itself really draws your attention to the flowers since the red contrasts with the other colors in the photo. In addition the photo then draws the attention to the fighters handing the flowers to the nuns.  Roses and flowers when given are to be gifts of affection and often are given for love or general affection. The flowers between these two parties shows the real affection the fighters have for the women. while not in a romantic way, the fighters still care enough for these women to have gone out of their way to get flowers for these nuns. The real impact of this photo is that the simplest gestures are often the most meaningful.

Second, The clear difference between the clothing of the different sides show their different commitments. The two sides of this photo are of two different religions that have fought in the past and even in the present, but in the photo there is respect and even a sense of humility in the fighters giving flowers to the nuns. The impact of the fighters giving the flowers shows that respect and thankfulness can be for anyone, even if they disagree with you on multiple levels. The act of helping others shows reverence and inspires others to be better. The emotions felt to the audience are one of happiness and peace since the photo shows innocence and humility between the two sides. The inspiration of unity in this shows that it is not just reserved for those who can agree but for those who can respect each other and come together based on decency and kindness if not anything else.

Finally, the clear difference of values being reconciled in this photo with the Islamic text on the head band next to the cross. The two parties in this photo have different things that they both hold important but the humanity in both of them causes peace between the two through the flower exchange.
