Brie Larson: Reaching New Heights

When you first think of superheroes, chances are Captain Marvel doesn’t come to mind. Yet Brie Larson has taken on the role of the character and turned her into a household name. Larson was born in 1989 in Sacramento, California. Her childhood was spent at home, as she was homeschooled. In fact, her first language was not English, it was French due to her father’s Canadian origin. At the age of 6, Larson expressed the desire to become an actor. Her parents took her to the ‘American Conservatory Theater,’ where she auditioned for attending the training program. Larson was the youngest student to be selected for the program. At the age of 7, Larson had to deal with the divorce of her parents. What seemed to be a defining moment of her childhood actually led her closer to her eventually calling. Her mother moved to Los Angeles, and it was here where Larson decided to pursue her dreams of becoming an actor.

 

In 2013 and 2014, Larson appeared in supporting roles in movies such as ‘The Spectacular Now,’ ‘Don Jon,’ and ‘The Gambler.’ In 2015, she was part of the comedy movie ‘Digging for Fire.’ The movie allowed Larson to improvise her role. The same year, she acted in the comedy movie ‘Trainwreck,’ which featured her as the sister of the lead character, portrayed by Amy Schumer. Rising in the ranks of successful actors, it was 2019 where Larson broke into the MCU. Captain Marvel featured Larson as an extraterrestrial Kree warrior who finds herself caught in the middle of an intergalactic battle between her people and the Skrulls. Living on Earth in 1995, she keeps having recurring memories of another life as U.S. Air Force pilot Carol Danvers. She is said to have earned $5 million for her role in 2019’s Captain Marvel. However, due to the film’s box office success and performance bonuses, she’s likely to have walked away with a lot more. Captain Marvel appeared once again in Avengers Endgame, ultimately helping the Avengers defeat Thanos and save the universe. 

 

The Marvels will reportedly make Brie Larson the highest paid actress in a superhero film. As opposed to the last film, the sequel will take place in the present day, after the events of Endgame and other noteworthy Disney+ shows. Alongside Larson, it was also confirmed that Iman Vellani, who will be playing Ms. Marvel, and WandaVision‘s Teyonah Parris, who will be playing Monica Rambeau, will be joining the film. Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige announced that the film will be in theatres on February 17th, 2023. The upcoming film will tie in directly to the Disney Plus series Ms Marvel.

 

Larson’s fame and wealth has only further enabled her to give back to the community. Brie Larson has extended her support for the AbleGamers charity on Twitter following her more pronounced presence in the gaming space recently. AbleGamers is a charity that helps make gaming more accessible to differently-abled gamers by providing specifically designed controllers and other equipment to ensure they get the best experience possible. “Thank you Alanah for sharing the mission of AbleGamers with me, I love hearing what you’re doing. Thank you so much,” said Larson on Twitter. Larson represents what it means to be a superhero, both on and off the screen.
