Tom Hiddleston: London’s Own Loki
Tom Hiddleston is primarily known by movie fans as his role of Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He was born in Westminster, London, to an English-born mother and Scottish-bor father. He continued on to the University of Cambridge, where he earned a double first in Classics. He continued to study acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, from which he graduated in 2005. Following this, he was cast in his first television role in The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby (2001). Hiddleston won his first film role as Oakley in Joanna Hogg’s award-winning first feature, Unrelated (2007).
Having become an international movie star, Hiddleston transitioned into one of America’s most popular movie franchises. Playing Thor’s brother Loki, he portrays envy throughout the entirety of the pilot film when he learns that he is adopted. He attempts to pull off a plan that gives him the throne of Asgard, yet ultimately fails. Loki’s villain arc sets off in Thor, and this carries directly into the 2012 hit The Avengers. Marvel choosing Loki as the villain of The Avengers not only reinforces the narrative continuity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it is also a testament to the strength of the character and the producers’ belief that Hiddleston would expand on the God of Mischief in impressive ways. Hiddleston was brought back for the remainder of the Thor trilogy, and then additional Avengers films as well. Over this time, he had developed a net worth of approximately 25 million dollars. This was not all Marvel movies, however.
Many believe that the finest films that Hiddleston has been a part of outside of the MCU are Midnight in Paris and War Horse. Even with smaller roles, he is sensationally charismatic as F. Scott Fitzgerald in the former and strikingly compassionate as a British army captain in the latter. Coming off his own spinoff show on Disney plus, Tom Hiddleston is looking outside the MCU for his next project. He’ll play the male lead in the upcoming Apple TV+ series The Essex Serpent. Here’s what we know so far. The Essex Serpent is based on Sarah Perry’s best-selling 2016 novel of the same name. Set in 1893, the historical novel focuses on a recently widowed woman named Cora Seaborne. After Cora’s abusive husband dies, she leaves London for Essex, where she pursues her interest in paleontology. The Essex Serpent launches worldwide on Apple TV+ on Friday May 12 2022, when the first two episodes of the six-parter will be available. The remaining episodes then run weekly.
“I feel very strongly that we are all responsible for the state of our world. Every child deserves a fair start to life.” This is Hiddleston’s outlook on his volunteer work, and why he believes more people should get involved with UNICEF. He serves as a UK Ambassadors and travels to South Sudan to volunteer. “Everyone I’ve met has experienced traumatic events that no one – least of all a child – should ever have to go through,” said Tom as he reflected on what he saw during the trip. Hiddleston continues to inspire individuals on the screen while also encouraging others to get involved off of it.
