I intend to write about the paradigm shift regarding left-handedness. In the past, being left-handed was seen as sinful and punishable, some lefties even being forced to use only their right hand. Now, being left-handed is an advantage in several athletic settings and more left-handed products, such as scissors, are available. The time period being covered is approximately the past century. The shift began around the 1970’s, so I will elaborate on the “before,” beginning around the 1920’s, through the “after,” into present day.

This shift is relevant to all people. Most people indicate a dominant hand, and which you prefer alters your lifestyle. Righties have a privilege, such as with western writing styles moving left to right. Lefties have faced persecution and, although it may be assumed to be simple, punishments were severe up until recent times. This shift must be explored to understand how forced right-handedness impacted natural lefties and how being left-handed has suddenly become an advantage in certain settings.

Claim: the main factor that initiated a shift towards acceptance of left-handedness was recognizing its advantages in athletic settings.

In terms of statis theory, my essay will explore the facts of this causation (conjecture) and the severity of punishments that were issued and the significant change that occurred (quality).

  • What are the facts? Is there a problem/issue? How did it begin and what are its causes?
  • Is it a good or bad thing? How serious is the problem/issue? Whom might it affect (stakeholders)?
