Playwicki Farm Finds!

I have been to a park near my house called Playwicki Farm more times than I can count. I have gone on jogs, walks and bike rides on the paved path with my friends and family. Out of all the times I have been there, I just realized a week ago there are more trails other than just the paved blacktop one. The map of trails can be found here.

I went there last week with my boyfriend, planning to just walk the usual loop and take in the beautiful weather. As we walked passed the opening to the other trails I told my boyfriend that I have always wondered what was back there. I had always assumed it was just an open grass area with maybe a few benches. Together we decided we would adventure back there and I am so happy we did.

The first thing we came across was a small creek with a large bridge connecting the gap. The image above shows me on top of the bridge with the creek running underneath. Once we crossed this bridge, the several trails were right in front of us and I was super excited to explore.

As we walked along the trail some, we came across a relatively large body of water for the middle of the woods. After reading the sign, it turns out this is a quarry used during the 1800s. This quarry served as an excellent source of limestone. The quarry can be seen in the image above.

The settlers in the area constructed kilns to burn the limestone sourced from the quarry. The image above shows one of two limekilns that were built by the settlers. The first reference to these kilns are in the 1830s, but it is believed they have been around for quite some time longer.

The rest of the hike we walked through the woods, passed the creek several times and looked over vast plains of land. It was a very relaxing, easy but enjoyable hike for a weekend day.

Playwicki Farm also offers other events including farmer markets, food truck events, small concerts and more. A list of there events are located on their website here. The paved trail also offers a historic monument designating it as the site of the Native American Village of Playwicki!

Sometimes adventure is right in front of us, we just have to be ready to adventure and explore. Like I said, I had no idea this place existed, but with a little exploring, I was thrilled with what we found. I hope you all enjoy the nice upcoming weather and explore somewhere nearby!
