Pennypack Park

Welcome back to the blog! Today, I will be talking about just one small section of the 1,600 acre Pennypack Park. We parked in Pennypack Park Lot 2 off of Verree Road, so if you want to travel the same path we did, parking here would give you the best access to these sights. This park truly offers something for everyone from bird watching stations, natural artworks, bike, horse and foot trails, fishing and so much more.

Once we got to the park, we started on the pave trail which is considered the bike trail. This was a very easy hike that had many looks out over the water. The image above shows just one of the many views of the water. The water is trout stocked, so fishing is also a great activity this park offers if you are a fisher.

We also saw many Canada Geese, Mallards and other birds. Above on the left is a Canada goose that let us get very close and on the right is a mallard duck. We also saw many ducks swimming out in the water when crossing a bridge.

As we continued on our walk, we came across a natural art piece which is constructed out of materials sourced from nature. The image above depicts the Thoreau’s Hut, which is inspired by the transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau and his book, Walden. More information about this artwork as well as others can be found here. I found this fascinating because in APUSH, I did a report about Henry David Thoreau, so I knew what this art piece was depicting.

We also came across some wood fencing with holes cut out of it. Behind the fence were bird baths and feeders. We figured this was a bird watching station. I would definitely love to see the birds when the feeders and baths are filled. The image above shows the view through the wood fence.

My mom and I only had a little over an hour to explore this park, but we were able to hike just under 3 miles and see some truly amazing things. I would love to go back to the park when I have more time to just wander and see what I might stumble across. Like I said earlier, there is 1,600 acres of land, so there is a lot to discover!

I also wanted to share a picture that I was able to capture of a mallard duck flying. Okay, so half of the duck is in the picture, but I honestly was so proud I was able to capture any of it in the first place.

I hope you enjoyed reading this post – I certainly enjoyed hiking and writing about it. See you next blog!
