Course title: Introduction to Computer Applications
This course will provide a survey of computing and information technologies and methods to conduct research, analyze information, and to communicate that information to global audiences, utilizing internet based research tools and other software. Furthermore, this course will introduce students to basic concepts in computer science, information literacy and communication and teach students to apply those concepts to any field of study.
The intent of the course is for students to be able to:
- Understand the basics of Information and Communication Technology.
- Display proficiency in Documentation, Report Writing and Presentations.
- Utilize software and internet based research to compose and deliver information in a clear and concise manor.
- Integrate and utilize Information Technologies and applicable software as a means to conduct research, analysis, and to communicate their findings to a global audience.
Course title: Digital Media Literacy and Skills
Digital media literacy is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, create, and use media information products, especially focusing on internet and/or mobile phone based media, and to understand the social, cultural and ethical issues that go along with the use of emerging technologies. Students gain skills in understanding digital services in Afghanistan, identifying needs, maneuvering through technologies and services, assessing quality of services, and understanding security in digital communities. Through in-class workshops, video screenings, and a final course project, students learn hands-on skills to understand and control their media environments and develop critical thinking skills to create value-added media.
The intent of the course is for students to be able to:
- Critically analyze the mass media, social media, new media, and mobile technologies in Afghanistan and internationally through writing, internet based research and conscientious consumption
- Develop analyses on the class blog on how the media are used to construct meaning and/or to persuade
- Utilize web curation tools and critical consumption techniques in digital media applicable in all fields.
- Utilize a toolset of web based programs to critically assess bias, stereotypes, data, and information sources in the mass media, particularly focusing on internet based sources
- Understand virtual communities, digital social norms, and digital participation in alternative and mainstream digital media.
