The Laser and Additive Manufacturing Division of the Applied Research Laboratory and the Center
for Innovative Materials Processing through Direct Digital Deposition (CIMP-3D), national leaders
in fundamental and applied research related to metal Additive Manufacturing (AM), are seeking
highly motivated and creative students to join our team. Summer employment with opportunities
for part-time work throughout the semester are available.
• Assist CIMP-3D faculty and staff with coordination and/or execution of metallurgical
characterization and mechanical testing of AM test coupons, perform data analysis.
• Operate and maintain state-of-the-art metal AM system, participate in system and process
selection for additive manufacturing.
• Design components for AM, lay out AM builds, document results.
• Design experiments, analyze and document results in reports and/or academic publications.
• Support machine programming and sample processing via directed energy deposition AM
(including robot), powder bed fusion AM, and hybrid AM + 5 axis machining.
• Support activities related to sensing and control and analysis of additive manufacturing process
monitoring to accelerate product qualification (hardware selection, sensor integration,
computer programming for data acquisition and data analysis, operation of process AM
simulation tools).
• Candidate will engage laboratory personnel to fully understand the processes of interest and
interpret the physical process in building simulation events.
Demonstrated initiative is required.
