Purpose
(Full-time Summer 2022)
STIHL Inc. has openings for Engineering Interns! These are full-time 40 hour per week internships with the projected work hours to be 8:30am – 5pm, M – F.
NOTE: These internship openings focus primarily on candidates who are relatively local to the Hampton Roads area as there are no relocation expenses, housing or transportation provided.

Specifications
- Current student working towards a degree in Engineering or other related field.
- Minimum 3.0 GPA required, higher preferred (on 4.0 scale).
- Must be at least a sophomore in a degree program, junior or higher preferred.
- Must be self-motivated, disciplined and able to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Must have good oral and written communication skills.
- Proficiency with MS Office programs is required.

Controls Engineer
Purpose

STIHL is seeking a highly motivated, detail oriented, Electrical Engineer to join our Machine and Automation department at STIHL’s corporate headquarters in Virginia Beach! This individual will develop a complete electrical schematic, sequence of operation, PLC program, vision system program, robotic equipment program.

- Oversees electrical hardware and software control design for new and existing assembly workstations, auto-stations, light automation machines, Creates electrical schematics, logic diagrams, layouts, wiring drawings, interface, electrical enclosure layout drawings, and bill of materials.
- Orders electrical components and units from suppliers and vendors.
- Supports the assembly, debugging and troubleshooting of new equipment.
- Programs, configures and develops sequence of operation for PLC program on new and existing assembly equipment. Improves existing PLC program of equipment for better performance.
- Recommends and implements techniques that enhance design performance, reduce cost, and improve assembly process.
- Prepares reports and presentations for management evaluation.
- All work affecting product quality shall be competent on the basis of appropriate education, training, skills, and experience.
Specifications
- BS in Electrical Engineering
- 4 to 6 years experience in concept and design of assembly equipment, automation machines or related equipment.
- Knowledge and hands-experience in design, installation and troubleshooting of PLC controls.
- Experience in the following:
- Electromechanical system design, and testing. Also Stepper motors, servomotors, and leak test equipment.
- Vision systems, sensors and machine safety products.
- Robotics experience is a plus
- Intermediate computer skills using MS Word, Excel, Power Point required;

Process Engineer – Guide Bar
Purpose

The Process Engineer will develop, maintain, and improve stamping, welding, assembly, machining and painting processes and technologies in a cost effective manner to meet product requirements by applying engineering methods pertaining to process, machine, vision systems and automation equipment.

- Utilizes technical and ROI analysis for identification and specification of new and replacement machine requirements
- Responsible for improving machine reliability, equipment performance, processes, cost, and production results related to safety, quality and scrap
- Responsible for start-up of new machines and automations, troubleshoots process issues
- Develops and updates PLC and CNC programs
- Suggests drawing changes and corrections in collaboration with R&D
- Resolves quality problems in collaboration with the Quality Assurance Department
- Provides support for projects, process developments of new parts, design changes, and statistical planning during part development phase
- Analyzes production times and related costs to provide information for management decisions
- Investigates and develops new production processes, quality inspection plans, work instructions and set-up standards
- Utilizes 3D modeling software to design and implement fixture, tooling, and automation components
- All other duties and responsibilities as assigned
Specifications
- 4 year college degree, preferably in engineering, manufacturing or related discipline
- 5+ years of related experience with machine tools, machining processes, automation equipment and materials
