System Protection Technician

Summary
System Protection personnel install and maintain the technology used in the protection of the Electric Grid. These positions will install and maintain the control systems and protective devices. Data communication technology is also a big part of their responsibility as smart microprocessor relays provide information to Operating Centers. Cyber Security applications are applied as well as NERC compliance maintenance regulations. These positions will require the completion of the System Protection Development Program.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Install and maintain protection systems that protect and monitor the transmission grid, the distribution grid and generating units.
- Ratio, meggar, set taps and take in service readings in current transformers that deliver signals to protection and metering systems.
- Program advanced microprocessor based equipment as well as verifying the logic settings in the relay setting matches the logic diagrams issued.
- Troubleshoot complex control circuits.
- Commission each data point that is transmitted from the Substation to the appropriate operations center.
- Apply cyber security measures to assure our protection systems are secure from outside intrusion.
