SPARC Research is in need of a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team in Warrenton, VA. Our position requires mechanical design experience with a working knowledge base of rocket motor propulsion design. 

Job Responsibilities 

The Mechanical Design Engineer will perform mechanical design engineering assignments that require the application of engineering principles, theories, and concepts to develop components and integrated propulsion systems for missile programs; using 3D CAD tools, design propulsion systems and components that will support the creation of detailed drawings used for manufacturing/procurement; work as a member of a team with other disciplines to mature designs through component and system analyses and testing and support design reviews; prepare and present their work at internal and external customer reviews; provide support to new business activities through preliminary designs, trade studies, and planning as required. 

Requirements 

Our position requires a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or an appropriate equivalent discipline, and a minimum of two (2) years of directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Requirements:

  • Engineering background with knowledge and understanding of propulsion systems
  • General understanding of manufacturing processes (heat treating, welding, brazing, rough and finish machining) 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) 
  • Satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, which requires U.S. Citizenship or U.S. Permanent Residency
  • Mechanical design experience with CAD software tools (SolidWorks, CREO and/or NX)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with risk management, system requirement flow downs, and requirements tracking 
  • Working knowledge of various drafting tools and software including geometry-based modeling
  • Experience in the design and development of mechanical structures, including thermal and structural analysis, practice, and principles 
  • General component and system-level knowledge of solid and liquid propulsion hardware
  • Familiar with 3D Printing/Additive Manufacturing
  • A working knowledge of GD&T and ASME standards
  • Active SECRET clearance

Work Environment:

SCHEDULE

The new member of our Maintenance Team will work FOUR, 10-hour night shifts with overtime available. The nightshift schedule is 9:00 p.m. – 7:00 a.m. with EVERY weekend off. Also, you will enjoy four days off in a row every other weekend!

  • 2-year Electro-Mechanical degree or equivalent in related field is preferred.

The Field Service Trainee (FST) works for up to six months with senior engineers to master field service responsibilities and acquire KHS product knowledge. Summary (Major Purpose of the Role): Serve as a team member within the Clinical Care Engineering group providing technical support to develop new medical devices and improve existing products.

Main Activities/Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain design history documentation in accordance with established new product development procedures.
  • Construct functional mechanical/electrical prototype systems throughout the design process.
  • Assist with qualification test activities to ensure that products comply with technical specifications and requirements.  Generate test protocols and document test results.
  • Coordinate with external resources and suppliers for component and subsystem sourcing.
  • Interact with internal cross-functional departments to complete project related activities.
  • Participate in project and technical design reviews.
  • Ensure compliance with quality control policies and applicable regulatory standards

Competencies:

  • Experience with all levels of documentation associated with new product development
  • Team-oriented and capable of working in a multi-disciplinary and creative environment
  • Highly motivated and capable of setting and achieving goals with minimal supervision
  • Possess strong written and verbal communications skills

Reporting Relationships and Supervision:

  • This position will work under the supervision of the Manager, Engineering – Mechanical   

Education and Experience:

  • BS or MS degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • Experience: minimum of 3 years of relevant product development experience preferred
  • Experience with 3D solid modeling (SolidWorks preferred)
  • Ability to read, understand and produce engineering drawings
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications
  • Familiar with basic machining and fabrication principles
  • Familiar with injection molding and plastic part assembly process and methods
  • Finite Element Analysis and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) experience
  • Experience with all levels of procedures and activities associated with new medical product development
  • Experience with development of medical devices in accordance which applicable ISO or FDA regulatory requirements

Summary (Major Purpose of the Role): Serve as a team member within the Engineering group providing electrical system design and development support for new and existing medical devices.

Main Activities/Responsibilities:

  • Perform all aspects of electrical design as a electrical engineer.  Including:
  • Conceptual studies and design analysis
  • Product requirements and component selection.
  • Create robust, reliable electrical board/system designs for medical equipment with complex electromechanical, electro-pneumatic, and user interface requirements.
  • Create electrical designs that are cost efficient, easily manufactured, and reliable.
  • Generate comprehensive engineering design documentation, including verification test protocols and reports as required.
  • Identify, develop and document technology leading to intellectual property protection.
  • Participate in detailed cross-functional team design reviews.
  • Ensure compliance with quality control policies and applicable regulatory standards.
  • Lead and assist with qualification test activities including thermal performance, electrical safety, EMC, and ESD.

Reporting Relationships and Supervision:

  • This position works under general guidance of the Manager, Engineering – Electrical. Most areas of responsibility are reviewed at weekly project meetings.

Education and Experience:

  • BS or MS in Electrical Engineering with a career profile oriented to electronic hardware development.
  • 3+ years of experience in electrical design, with demonstrated success carrying projects through to production (preferred).
  • Proficient in analog/digital circuit and PCB design (Altium Designer strongly preferred) with experience in circuit modeling and simulation.
  • Knowledge of FDA, ISO and international regulations related to medical device design and manufacturing.
  • Experience with the quality management systems and design control requirements for medical device manufacturers.
  • Experience in lithium based battery design and charging techniques.
  • Experience with brush or brushless DC motor control.
  • Experience with wireless communication topologies and protocols.
