JOB SUMMARY:

We are seeking a highly motivated Manufacturing Engineer Intern to join our team for the Summer. This internship offers the opportunity to work alongside experienced engineers and technicians to support the design, implementation, and optimization of automated systems used in our cabinet manufacturing processes. You will gain valuable exposure to engineering principles, automation systems, and lean manufacturing techniques in a fast-paced, hands-on environment.

 

PRINCIPAL FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in the design and testing of automated systems for cabinet manufacturing processes, including CNC machines, robotic arms, and conveyor systems.
  • Collaborate with the engineering team to develop solutions that improve production efficiency and product quality through automation.
  • Help troubleshoot and maintain automated systems, ensuring minimal downtime and optimal performance.
  • Analyze production data to identify trends, inefficiencies, and opportunities for process improvement.
  • Support the creation and modification of engineering drawings, schematics, and technical documentation.
  • Work closely with the quality control team to ensure that automation solutions meet safety and compliance standards.
  • Participate in cross-functional meetings and provide input on ongoing projects and initiatives.
  • Conduct research on the latest automation technologies and tools relevant to the cabinetry industry.
  • Assist in implementing lean manufacturing principles to streamline workflows and reduce waste.

 

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS: 

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related field.
  • Basic understanding of manufacturing processes, with an interest in automation and robotics.
  • Familiarity with CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks) and engineering design principles.
  • Experience or coursework in automation technologies, including PLC programming, robotics, or CNC systems, is a plus.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Proactive, eager to learn, and capable of taking initiative in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing concepts and process optimization techniques.
  • Familiarity with industrial automation software (e.g., Siemens, Allen-Bradley, or other PLC programming languages).

Job Description

Essential Duties

This internship will provide an opportunity for engineering students who are currently pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering to get hands-on experience working with engineers in a metal manufacturing organization. The intern will be called upon to support a variety of activities in a fast paced manufacturing environment.

Duties to Include:

  • Identifying process changes to improve quality and productivity
  • Tool design and implementation
  • Time studies
  • Material flow & handling
  • Work instruction updates and development

Education Level

Must be currently enrolled as a Sophomore, Junior or Senior in a Mechanical Engineering degree program

Experience

  • Knowledge of computer aided drafting/drawing software (AutoCAD, Inventor, etc.)
  • Experience using Microsoft Office programs
  • Knowledge of CAD packages

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of the job, the employee is required to have the ability to concentrate and perform responsibilities by maintaining a constant state of focus and mental alertness. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to stand, use hands (including gripping & grasping) and reach with arms, including reaching overhead and outward frequently. The employee is frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and talk or hear. The employee will frequently walk. The employee must be able to lift and/ or move up to 20 lbs. Specific vision requirements such as color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus are also required.

Work Environment

While in Production areas, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles. OVERALL PURPOSE
Assemble and repair electrical/electronic products including lighting systems, cables, connectors, subassemblies and printed circuit boards. Conducts tests and calibrates electronic subassemblies and printed circuit boards. Provide support for production engineering and engineering design projects

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & FUNCTIONS
(Other duties may be assigned)
• Read work orders, follow test and/calibration procedures, and receive written or verbal instruction to complete day-to-day assignments.
• Compile, organize, record and interpret data accurately.
• Follow established policies for “Static Safety” and handling electronic assemblies.
• Understands and is capable of using hand tools to crimp, screw, bolt, solder, cement, and perform
similar operations to join or secure parts.
• Align and troubleshoot amplifiers, DC-DC converters, inverters, and off line switching power supplies.
• Install finished assemblies or subassemblies in cases and cabinets.
• Performs various assembly tasks including potting, cleaning and epoxy bonding assemblies.
• Completes required documentation such as tags, labels, and reports to support the production/test process.
• Interact well with all levels of staff, customers and general public, and provide training and
instruction as needed.
• Maintains clean work area and performs house keeping as required.
• Maintains compliance with all Company and quality policies and procedures.
• Must be able to work overtime as needed.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS
• Education:
HS Diploma/GED and four (4) years of experience in electronics/electrical manufacturing/test environment or similar field. At least one year of college level courses in electro-mechanical, mechanical, or electrical engineering.
• Experience: Some prior work experience in a manufacturing environment preferred. Previous printed circuit board assembly, test, or field technician experience a plus.
• Required Skills: Possess good communication skills. Must be able to use a computer to enter and compile data using Microsoft Windows products. Effectively use calibration and test equipment, and small hand tools such as; crimps, wire cutters, soldering iron, scissors, etc… Possess strong math (Calculus Preferred), reading, mechanical/electrical aptitude, problem solving, and decision-making skills.
• Direction Received: Plant Management and Department Management/ Group Leader.
• Responsibility for Direction of Others: None.
• Physical Requirements: Requires continuous standing or sitting and frequent walking.
Generally, work is non-strenuous. Work may require lifting up to 40lbs without assistance to place
an object(s) at table height.
• Covid-19 Vaccination – Completed Primary series of Pfizer, Moderna, or J&J vaccine preferred

WORKING CONDITIONS
• General: Manufacturing environment with limited climate control. Non-standard hours, daily and weekend overtime required.

Summer 2024 Scholarship Opportunity

I am happy to report that the Summer Success Scholarship has received funding for Summer 2024 at an equal level to Summer 2023! Eligibility requirements continue to be as follows and scholarships will be in the amount of $2,000Altoona has access to 33 scholarships.

  • Enrolled in at least one summer course at any Penn State campus
  • Demonstrate that taking a summer course is necessary to get back on track for their degree program
  • Demonstrated financial need (FAFSA and/or evidence of unforeseen financial circumstances)

Applications for the Summer Success Scholarship are now open. The deadline to apply for the scholarship is Friday, April 19, 2024. Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.
