  1. Staff Awards Rebecca Moran, Past Chair

Rebecca followed up with Cherrie Henry, re: SAC’s recommendations. We opened the discussion to the Chancellor during the meeting. Lori noted that, in the past, some nominees chose not to be recognized. She agreed that a letter can be sent to the nominee and nominator and provide all nominees with the option to be recognized at the ceremony in print.

  1. All Staff Retreat Rebecca Moran, Past Chair

The first planning committee went well. They have dates in mind for May, but nothing has been confirmed. Last year was a great success and Rebecca has scheduled a meeting with the Chancellor to discuss format and budget.

  1. Student Kindness Project Shari Routch, Visitor

Shari attended the meeting to discuss the Student Kindness Project (name TBD). The idea for this project came out of the Student Enrollment Group. The group wants to look at ways to increase enrollments, retain students, and assist with student success through fostering communities. It was suggested that SAC spearhead this project to encourage faculty and staff participation.

Kindness projects can be as simple as smiling at and encouraging students so that they feel cared for her. Ideas included motivational quotes/sticky notes on mirrors, distributing candy or snacks, etc. This could be done all times of the year, but especially during busy, stressful times (beginning of year, finals week, etc.) One suggestion was that faculty and staff get more involved with Hugs for Hounds.

It was noted that students really enjoyed the costumes & decorations (office decorating) during the 75th Anniversary).

Essie Auker suggested that offices sign up to do different things each week (greeting students, etc.)

Toni Feret mentioned a recent Penn State news story regarding a Random Act of Kindness group at Behrend.

  1. CPR, First Aid, and AEDs Open Discussion

Per Deb Stitt – there is a first aid kit in each department which is manned by that department at this time. She will connect with Pete Muldoon to revisit the idea of University Police refiling/providing kits.

Deb Stitt is interested in certifying everyone on campus in AED, CPR, and First Aid and providing Safety/Security assessments if interested. She would like to get in touch with each office to discuss roles & responsibilities and Run/Hide/Fight. Typically, these sessions take four hours. There is a cost of $30 – $35 which the Chancellor has offered to cover in her budget.

  1. Chancellor’s Visit Lori J. Bechtel-Wherry, Visitor

Lori thanked members for serving on SAC. She announced the upcoming holiday party, which she will be sponsoring personally to express her gratitude to faculty and staff. (See Attachment)
