The Career Services Office is located in 205 Slep Student Center. The mission of the Career Services Office is to support and challenge students and Penn State Altoona alumni in achieving their goals through the development of life-long career planning and job search skills and to provide employment information, experiential education resources, and programming in a customer oriented environment. Specific components include career counseling using assessment instruments; explaining occupations and how they relate to academic majors; utilizing career planning resources in the Career Resource Library and using various online resources; gaining experience in your major through summer work experiences and shadowing; interviewing skills; resume preparation; job search strategies; employment opportunities; and assistance with applying to graduate and professional school.
During career counseling, assessment instruments can be administered to students undecided about their career plans. A course entitled Effective Career Decision Making (CNED 100) is offered for three elective credits to freshman and sophomore students who are undecided about their major and career selection.
Sophomores and juniors are encouraged to gain experience in their fields of interest through summer work experience. If a student needs assistance with locating a summer work experience, he/she may schedule an appointment with a counselor who can work with them to update their resumé, cover letter, and identify employers in their geographical area of interest.
The On-Campus Recruitment program at Penn State Altoona allows students a convenient means of meeting with prospective employers at the college. More than 900 corporate recruiters visit University Park and students are encouraged to participate in both programs. Students are also encouraged to attend career fairs at the college as well as regional career fairs that provide networking opportunities for candidates and employers.
Career Services offers a variety of handouts for students on social media resources such as LinkedIn and Twitter. Students are encouraged to use social media as a way to build a network of employers and professional contacts. Students are also encouraged to build e-portfolios to showcase their education, experience, and skills.
The Career Services Office utilizes Nittany Lion Career Network to post job opportunities. We encourage you to contact the Career Services Office at 814-949-5058 for a career planning appointment during office hours of Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
