Hey guys!  So today I want to discuss a specific genre of films that is not for everyone, horror movies.  I personally love horror films, but I do think it can be difficult to make a really good horror movie.  Usually by the time they get the end of it I think they have gone over board or maybe it gets so abstract that it is not scary anymore.

Fig 1.

First, we should start with a scary movie that received best picture in 1992, The Silence of the Lambs.  The Silence of the Lambs got a 96% on rotten tomatoes, and if you like thrillers, this is a must see.  This movie is not ghost scary, it is more real life scary.  As always, I do not want to give the movie away, but it is about a cannibal, so as you could imagine, it is a pretty scary movie.  There are multiple scenes I can think of that give me chills.  I would highly recommend this film.  This movie won best picture so it is scary, but there is also amazing acting and other interesting plot lines and themes laced throughout the movie.

Fig 2. The Invisible Man

I also just saw a scary movie, and I think it is out of theaters.  If it is not, it probably will be soon, because movie theaters around me are closed.  The movie is called The Invisible Man.  This movie got a 91% on rotten tomatoes which I find kind of surprising, but it was very entertaining.  This movie is about a man who stalks his ex girlfriend, another creepy plot.  The Invisible Man has more jump out scary scenes as compared to the Silence of the Lambs.  I think this would be a fun movie to watch with your friends (once social distancing ends) or on a first date.  The lead actress in this movie, Elizabeth Moss, is so good.  She also plays the lead in Handmaids Tale if anyone has seen that show, I would highly recommend it, also a creepy show.

Fig 3. The Babadook

Last, I want to discuss one of my favorite horror movies, and I think this movie is on Netflix, The Babadook.  This movie is more of a classic ghost scary movie.  The Babadook received a 98% on rotten tomatoes and similar to The Silence of the Lambs, it has different plot lines and twists that keep you on the edge of your seat until the end of the movie.  I would highly recommend any of the films I listed above if you are looking for a good scary movie to watch this weekend in quarantine.

  1. I love a good horror film because it really makes you have nightmares about it that same night. It would be best to turn off the lights and watch The Invisible Man late at night. I am familiar with the musical works of Howard Shore and he definitely brings the immersion. I am quite interested in The Babadook because of the mythical aspect.
