In the midst of the McCarthy Era, state legislatures across the nation were signing into law legislation to root out Communists and their sympathizers. Caught in the middle of this fervor was Wendell Scott McRae, a PSU employee fired for refusing to sign the Pennsylvania Loyalty Oath.
Following the controversial firing of Associate Mathematics Professor Dr. Lee Lorch, the Penn State Chapter of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Local 500 urged the Pennsylvania Federation of Labor to review the case as a violation to academic freedom and to prompt the creation of contractual protections for faculty.
