A Language That Everyone Understands

It is cliché but the answer is music.

I am grateful to have been exposed to a lot of different kinds of music growing up. I grew up listening to English, Hindi, and Marathi music. India has so many different languages and cultures, so wherever you live in India, you will be able to learn about every part of the country and enjoy many cultures at once.

Learning classical music taught me that music doesn’t need to have words to move me. I think this has carried over into the way I try to approach all kinds of music. I do enjoy great lyrics that I can understand, but I also appreciate just listening to music even when I don’t understand the words. I mainly listen to English and Hindi music now, but I try to make the effort to discover artists from other countries because there’s so much talent out there!

Here are a few artists that I have been loving!

Pomme: Pomme writes her music primarily in French. She has great artistry and her voice reminds me warm summer days. Songs like Adieu mon homme, and Ceux qui rêvent are memorable to me. High school French classes paid off a bit.

Pomme – Pas De Merde

IU: Music in Korean! I have heard only great things about IU and her music. She sounds absolutely angelic.

IU - 아이유 - Rakuten Viki

Charlotte Cardin: Canadian, but from a French-speaking family! She has such a rich voice, and sounds so emotionally compelling. She writes in English and French both. While her original music is great, I discovered her because of her amazing cover of Wicked Game by Chris Isaak.

Mariya Takeuchi: Such an inspiring Japanese artist. I found her because of her popular song Plastic Love. Stunning career in pop!

  1. This is really interesting! I have been wanting to expand my music tastes lately, so I will be sure to give these a listen. I feel that listening to music where I do not know the words will be challenging, but it will pay off in the long run.

  2. Hey Ananya!

I love your taste in music. It reminds me a bit of my own. I grew up with my parents listening to rap and r&b because they were pretty young and that’s what a lot of teenagers were listening to in the early 2000’s I suppose. I also was exposed to a lot of Spanish music, and though I didn’t appreciate it when I was little, once I grew up I really began to love it! My dad also loves classic rock so I listen to that type of music too. I love some country, pop, indie, rock, the Beatles, and probably everything else in between. I love the way you describe music, not listening so much on the words but how the sounds make you feel. That is something I can definitely relate to.

  3. Hi,
You are so blessed to have grown up with all of this music, I am seriously jealous. My music taste has always been bland because I never really knew where to look when trying to find what I like the most. I have listened to a lot of French music, and even though I don’t understand it, I think it is beautiful. Thank you for sharing these artists. I think music is one of the best ways to get people together.
