An Opportunity Arises

An Opportunity Arises

Ever since I decided to come to Penn State I knew that there would be many opportunities presented to me. At the start of my second week here at UP I was presented with one such opportunity. I had an interview with the director of basketball operations of the men’s basketball team, Ross Condon. I had shown interest in becoming a manager for the team towards to end of my senior year in high school. Becoming a manager will allow me to stay around the game of basketball, which is a huge passion of mine while also being able to make network connections within Penn State Basketball.

Being a manager would be an awesome and memorable experience for my college career. However this experience does not come without its detractors. Being a manager is an extremely large commitment and there is a ton of work involved. Being a manager is like being on the basketball team except you’re expected to be there longer than the players or coaches. Not only are you expected to be there before practice to set up and to clean up after but you must also be able to help out in drills. For that you need to know the ins and outs of basketball as well. I played basketball in high school so I have an edge in that aspect and hope to use that to my advantage if I am able to become a manager.

Being a manager is a lot of work and takes a lot of time out of one’s schedule. However all of these duties as a manager also have to be coupled with all the schoolwork that comes with being a student here as well. If there were one aspect that I am nervous the most about becoming a manager, it would have to be that. Being in college implies a lot of homework and hard classes but throwing all of that on top of having the hard work of being a manager is a daunting task that is quite intimidating.

Despite the immense task of being a manager as well as being a student here I feel like this is an opportunity that I can’t let slip past me. Being a manager would be just an awesome experience if I am given the opportunity to become one. Previous managers have said that every menial task they did was all worth it. If the staff at PSU basketball was impressed with me and they decide to offer me a position on their managerial staff I know I won’t pass up on an opportunity like this. So hopefully it’ll all work out and I find myself on the sideline come this winter!

  1. Luck favors the prepared. Put yourself in the right place, and you’ll achieve this dream. Hint: get over there.
