Montserrat, Spain
If you are ever in Barcelona, I highly recommend visiting Montserrat. Montserrat is a multi-peaked mountain range near Barcelona, in Catalonia, Spain. It is about an hour train ride from Barcelona.
I’m not sure how many ways there are to get to the peak, but my friends and I went up by a cable car. The views from the cable car were spectacular.
At the top of the mountain, there is a beautiful benedictine monastery, the Santa Maria de Montserrat. The monastery was founded in the 11th century and rebuilt between the 19th and 20th centuries, and still functions to this day, with over 70 monks.
There are many trails to explore this mountain peak and funiculars to reach different heights to explore. There are many beautiful statues and very old churches along the many trails at Montserrat.
The stairway to heaven sculpture (pictured above) is also very popular at Montserrat. Unfortunately, you cannot climb it anymore, but it is still very beautiful to see.
Montserrat is truly a gorgeous place to visit and it is considered to be one of the most sacred places in the world because of the famous Black Madonna that resides in the Montserrat Monastery. It is very important to be respectful when visiting. I will never forget visiting Montserrat. Thanks again for reading!
The cable car looks like it would give you such a pretty view, I probably wouldn’t want to get off. I’m glad you enjoyed your trip!
I love old Spanish architecture. The monastery there reminds me so much of Alhambra, which is interesting considering Alhambra was built by Muslim Moors.
