RCL: Artifacts

This is a picture for the Black Lives Matter movement that was created on July 13, 2013, by Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi advocating and protesting against racial discrimination. This movement is about bringing light to racially motivated violence and police brutality which is an important part of our social life and American society. This object is worth studying because racially motivated violence and police brutality are especially relevant right now. There are people every day that are being treated unfairly and want justice where is it should be served.

This is a picture of different media applications representing what we have today, social media. Social media has been a hot topic for a while now about whether or not it is good for our society, which is important when it comes to structures of society. This object is worth studying because there are so many people of all different ages that use social media every day. It is important that we know what it is and the dangers of it and how to use social media properly.

This is a video of Hillary Clinton giving a speech called “Gay Rights Are Human Rights” on April 21, 2017. Clinton is discussing that there needs to be change in the way society perceives certain individuals based on their sexuality or the way they identify themselves, which is a step in the right direction for social life and equality. I think this is an important topic because we have been fighting for LGBTQ+ rights for centuries. There are still laws and acts that prohibit LGBTQ+ people from receiving basic human rights like health care.

  1. Artifact 1: a commonplace are the protests that are currently happening and the events surrounding this message. You could also talk about Black Out Tuesday and the social media impact of Black Lives Matter in that last year. Or you could mention how people are trying to undermine this movement via the phrase All Lives Matter and the impact on the slogan.

Artifact 2: You could also talk about the generational uses of social media and how they unite certain generations. For example, our parents use the Facebook more than instagram and our generation primarily uses snapchat and instagram. You could explore the reasons behind this and the commonplaces of the different social media apps of certain ages.

Artifact 3: You could discuss the lasting impacts of these laws and why these laws are still around even though they undermine individuals rights. You could also talk about the progress being made towards equality and how as a society we can make a difference to be an ally towards to LGBTQ+ community.

  2. Artifact 1:You could talk about the meaning of the symbol. How does the fist represent the movement?

Artifact 2: You could go into the positive and negative changes of having social media be so integral in our society.

Artifact 3: You could discuss the last impacts of the speech and if the reforms made since the speech have helped/hurt the LGBTQ movement.
