Rcl3: Blow In Her Face

Blow in her face and she will follow you anywhere. Very bold to say the least. This shocking advertisement is a great example of evolution. This ad is extremely inappropriate by today’s standards, but back then this was the norm. From this ad, I will discuss the unique visuals, the target audience, and the outdated dialogue.

The classic beautiful woman on the front page. She is the subject of this ad. If someone with poor eyesight was looking at this, they would tell you it’s a prostitution ad. This woman is being completely sexualized. The makers of Tipalet want the audience to assimilate smoking their brand with attracting women. This shocking technique of sexualizing women is rarely, if at all seen today.

The next important visual we can see in this ad is the bright fun colors. Bright fun colors are often assimilated with youthfulness, fun, energy, and good health. How ironic a cigarette company displays the opposite of what their product does. To make sure we are on the same page, so far, we know from this ad that Tipalet cigarettes are healthy and will get us laid, got it.

Now let’s move on to the text. Obviously, we have the very large incredible one-liner, “Blow in her face and she will follow you anywhere.” Although I don’t live in the time of this ad every part of me refuses to believe that blowing cigarette smoke in the face of women is attractive. Continuing, if we look towards the bottom right, we can see a list of the delicious flavors. Here they use very appealing verbiage like, “luscious Tipalet blueberry”. This type of wordage makes the cigarette not seem gross but rather, youthful, and tasteful.

It only gets better, trust me. So, to understand who the target audience is we must backtrack. Who would want to attract women? Easy, most men. Who would want to appear youthful, vibrant, and energetic? Easy, most young people. Who would want to try fruity and tasty flavors like berry? Easy, kids. So, with simple addition, we realize this ad directly targets young adolescent men. This is a complete abomination.  They are taking advantage of people who are not yet fully developed or informed. An amazing economic tactic and an awful ethical tactic.

Ads like this do not exist today, and for good reason. For example, the vape company JUUL recently got sued for targeting youth in their ads and flavors. It is reasonable to assume this ad would be flagged from the internet immediately. And rightfully so because advertisements are incredibly powerful at influencing people. So next time you see a civil, appropriate ad you can laugh to yourself and think of this piece of garbage that Tipalet posted.

  1. I think this ad was surely fitting for the time, but look at it today certainly gives off negative feelings. I agree that color schemes can help to point the direction of the ad to certain demographics, brighter colors catch the eye of younger people. This was a bad ad, nice find!
