Dr. Nicolás Sacco (University of Buenos Aires, Argentina), Assistant Teaching Professor of Sociology and Demography and Program Coordinator, Graduate Studies in Applied Demography (APDEM), Department of Sociology and Criminology at The Pennsylvania State University. Former Postdoctoral Scholar at The Population Research Institute (PRI) (2018-19) and at the Center for Development and Regional Planning (CEDEPLAR)-Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil (2017-18). He conducted research projects based at the Population Studies Center (CENEP) of Argentina.
He holds a Ph.D. in Social Sciences from the University of Buenos Aires (UBA). Former Visiting Student Researcher in the Department of Demography at the University of California, Berkeley (2015-17) and Ph.D. Scholar of the National Council of Scientific and Technical Research of Argentina (CONICET) and the UBA He is also a Master in Generation and Analysis of Statistical Information from the National University of Tres de Febrero and a Specialist in Social Demography from the National University of Luján. Bachelor and Advanced Teaching Training Diploma in Sociology and Visiting Lecturer of Social Demography at the UBA.
His publications, teaching and research areas include Social Demography, Social and Demographic Theory, Mortality, Fertility, Social Classes, Social Research Methodology.

Matthews is the Faculty Director of the Applied Demography Programs (May, 2018 – present). For the past six years he has served as director of the residential dual-degree Graduate Program in Demography (60+ students, 45+ graduate faculty). He currently serves as editor of the journal, Spatial Demography and is past co-editor of Demography. He also has served on the editorial boards of several leading journals: American Journal of Preventive Medicine, Health and Place, and GeoJournal and served as guest editor for several others (including, Demographic Research, Mathematical Population Studies, The Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, and GeoForum). Matthews is trained in quantitative geography, GIS, and planning with much of his research focusing on population and health outcomes. He has been at Penn State 25 years, during which time he founded the Geographic Information Analysis Core (now the Computational and Spatial Analysis Core) and served as its director for over 17 years. Since 2005 Matthews has served on the advisory board to Penn State’s online MGIS and Certificate Program in GIS; and he is a regular capstone supervisor for the MGIS program.
