Our song of the week for (10/23) this Friday is 4EVER by Clairo. This song came out of her Diary 001 album in 2018. This song lands itself in the indie genre. You can find this song on all streaming platforms and there’s a pretty cool music video on Youtube!
Best Scenario for this song to be played: When you’re walking around out and about, perfect fit for sunny and rainy days.
Lyrics
You called me wondering why I changed
Or why I don’t look the same
Why are things so differently now?
Am I gonna feel this way forever?
Are you gonna be around for me to count on, yeah?
Is it ever gonna change?
Am I gonna feel this way forever?
Are you gonna be around for me to count on? Count on
On on on, on on on on on x4
Some things just never seem to fade
I’m thinking ’bout how we were on our first date
You understood, the words I was saying
I knew I’d never let you get away
Put me in your bedroom and I’ll sing a little song
Hold you tight, squeeze you right, give you all I’ve got
See you in the morning, over coffee, we’ll talk, oh
Am I gonna feel this way forever?
Are you gonna be around for me to count on?
Is it ever gonna change?
Am I gonna feel this way forever?
Are you gonna be around for me to count on? Count on
On on on, on on on on on x4
This song has been on repeat the entire week. I chose this song for the song of the week because I think it really fits with being in college and just the times we are currently in right now. It’s not very lyrical to me and it’s more of the melody, the beat, and Clairo’s voice. The melody and beat give it that “when you’re walking around about” scenario. It makes me want to move my feet and gracefully sway across the sidewalk.
“4EVER” is about going to college, experiencing friendships, relationships, and worrying about change. Clairo said in a genius interview that she wrote this song the night before she left for college. I bolded some lyrics as you can see that really stood out to me. “You called me wondering why I’d change,” “Why are things so different now.” She’s in college now and she doesn’t know if the friendships at home are going to stick. This also ties into the lyric “Are you gonna be around for me to count on?”. When she says “Is it ever gonna change, am I gonna feel this way forever”. For a while in college Clairo said she was having a hard time finding friends, but eventually did find friends that wanted to help her grow. She was having a hard time being sure about the school she chose and her friends. I think we all can relate to Clairo right now. Especially being in college during a pandemic, you’re always wondering how things will change and if this feeling, whatever it is, will go away? On the relationships aspect of the song she says “Hold you tight squeeze you right, tell you what I want.” In the song, her voice pitch gets a little higher when she says this line, and It really puts an emphasis on it. She’s talking about being with someone and having that one person that just gets you right off the bat to me. Along with when she says “You understood the words that I was saying.” She talks about how you always have that one person where when you meet you guys just understand each other. This song is understandably everywhere, but it resonates. Being a freshman in college, all these new experiences and new people can be a lot, but the feeling is normal.
I think that’s why I like this song so much, Clairo’s voice is extremely soft and delicate in her music which makes it so appealing and understandable. It’s like having someone vent for you. Clairo has been on the come up recently because more and more people are starting to listen to her and enjoy her type of music, which I’d describe as a soft indie. If you need a relaxing minute to yourself, but you don’t want to sit in silence, I would recommend Clairo’s music 100 percent.
Give Clairo and “4EVER” a listen and tell me what you think!
I love this song! I never knew that Clario was writing about going off to college, this will definitely give me a new perspective when listening to it again. Good job analyzing her lyrics.
I listened to the song while I read the blog. I get that walking down the street feel from it, too. I think it’s the beat for me. I like how you did research into Clairo’s writing process and the meaning of the song. I really like seeing what inspires the lyrical and musical components of songs.
I had heard a bunch about Clairo but hadn’t directly listened to a song by her until now and this song was super enjoyable. Also knowing the context and meaning of the song it definitely hits harder and makes it much more relatable.
