It’s the last Friday of October, which means no song of the week, but album of the month. This was a hard decision to pick just one album, but I went with what I’ve listened to most in October alone. Therefore album of the month goes to Brent Faiyaz with F**K The World. This album came out early February this year and is in the R&B/Soul genre.
Best scenario to listen to this album: A rainy day car ride or laying in bed, lights out and you just need to think. This album will bring out all of the feelings in you.
Brent Faiyaz definitely sets a certain lifestyle with his music, especially in this album. I’d give this album a 9/10. Mainly because some of the best songs on the album are very short. Clouded which is the second track is one of the most known songs and it’s extremely good, but only 1 minute and 50 seconds long. I also gave it a 9/10 because I don’t feel as if track nine Lost Kids Get Money fits with the tone of the album. This album gives me a reminiscing somber tone, while this song throws me off. I feel as if it switches the tone to a semi- party tone and then switches back. Other than that this album is just about perfect. My favorite track on this album is Rehab (Winter in Paris).
In an interview with Vice Magazine, Brent talks about the making of this album and talks about the tracklist. Some things that stood out to me in the interview is that in his songs specifically “F**K The World (Summer in London), the song is based on his experience in London as a black man compared to America. He says “Took a trip to London just to hear how they talk” in the song and in the interview he says and I quote “I’ll go out to London and people will ask, “How are you liking London?” I’m like, I’m really fucking with it. Then they’ll say, “The police out there in America, they beat y’all up.” He talked about how it was so easy to say and normalized when it shouldn’t be.
Brent Faiyaz described this album as embracing the good stuff. The good stuff being “The overindulgence of sex, money, bullshit but also saying fuck the world.” In this album Brent goes deep, but he’s not new to this. In the beginning I said he sets a certain lifestyle and not only does he do that, but he also expresses his frustration for the world. I gotta give this album to Brent. He’s talented, but also extremely well spoken. His music puts an unconventional twist on R&B and gives it a subtle Rap tone. A lot of artist do this, but what sets Brent Faiyaz apart is that he has mastered it. This is the way it’s supposed to sound.
If I could compare him to an artist I’d compare him to SZA. The emotion, the voice, the deeper meanings. It all goes together so well. I’d love to see them on a track together one day because right there is a powerful duo. I give F**K The World a 9/10, The creation of it a 7/10 and Brent Faiyaz as an R&B artist, 10/10. This album is near perfect. So perfect that I may or may not have a giant poster of it in my dorm :).
I’ll post the Vice interview link at the end if you want to check it out.
Listen to the album if you dare and tell me what your favorite song is!
