Our song of the week for (3/4) this Thursday is Gravity by Brent Faiyaz featuring Tyler The Creator. This song was released as a single in January of 2021. I’m going to throw this song in the R&B category. Tyler gives this song a little bit of Hip Hop to it, but Brent Faiyaz soul evens it out. You can find this song on all streaming platforms ( Spotify, Apple Music, etc.)
Best Scenario for this song to be played: A road trip to anywhere is perfectly fitting or if you just want to hear a well crafted song.
Lyrics
But you want me home
I’d get you what you want
But you want me alone (I’m gone, baby I’m active)
You held me up when I was down and out
But I don’t want you waiting ’round for me
I don’t want you waiting too long x2
We on front page of them blogs
Would you be mad at me if the whole world
Knew the-, we was on? It would be tragedy
Y’all n***s be globe-trotting like travel teams
You always in my travel dreams
Lace up two 3-stripes and I’m gone
But you just want me home
Shorty hit my jack like
“What the fuck you doin?” Bitch I’m all alone
You gon’ press me now?
Is you gon’ stress me out and cuss me out?
I had my fair share of women, feelings don’t catch me now
But you want me home (home)
I’d get you what you want (superstar status)
But you want me alone (I’m gone, baby I’m active)
You held me up when I was down and out
But I don’t want you waiting ’round for me
I don’t want you waiting too long (she hold me down)
(She hold me down)
But I got things to do (come on)
It’s too much to be your boyfriend, too much
And you ain’t making this much easier
If I only knew this
When I used to be your best friend
You see me blowing up
But you want me home (home)
I’d get you what you want (superstar status)
But you want me alone (I’m gone, baby I’m active)
You held me up when I was down and out
But I don’t want you waiting ’round for me
I don’t want you waiting too long (she hold me down)
(She hold me down)
Hard to be down to earth, when you nesting on mars
You comment on how I move, too much space to assume (I’m just saying)
But I’ma tell you the truth, shit
Now when I’m gone, and I roam ’round the globe
For three months that’s too long without something that’s sweet
So I phone little treats, that’s a snack, not a feast
They don’t mean much to me
‘Cause I know that I have a bakery back at home
Am I wrong for-, fuck, come on
But you want me home (home)
I’d get you what you want (superstar status)
But you want me alone (I’m gone, baby I’m active)
You held me up when I was down and out
But I don’t want you waiting ’round for me
I don’t want you waiting too long (she hold me down)
(She hold me down)
You held me up when I was down and out
But I don’t want you waiting ’round for me
I don’t want you waiting too long (she hold me down)
(She hold me down)
Let’s get into this. I’m going to be honest with you, I was hesitant to do this song because I’m not a complete fan of it. I’d like to say I’m pretty educated in Brent Faiyaz’s music and voice. In this song his true potential is at 65 percent. Brent’s voice isn’t as soft or high as it usually is. It’s lower to match with the beat of this song. Tyler in this song is doing less singing and more rapping. Side note: I love how versatile he can get with his voice. I would’ve never thought that Brent and Tyler would collab, just because of how different their voices are and how much power they truly hold at 100 percent. It’s hard to find that balance, where you both can sound great without overpowering one another. I’m not going to say they did the best job at finding that balance, because they simply didn’t, but they did come together and still made this song sound good.
Something this song is missing that both of their songs usually have is the creativity in lyrical rhymes. It’s repetitive and catchy. Which isn’t a bad thing, it’s just not like their normal music. It’s always good to get out of your normal discography though.
Brent Faiyaz changes up his voice in this song many times. The difference is that it’s with the help of some autotune, which isn’t normal for him, but once again it’s good to try new things. For example in verse 1, when he switches from the chorus, his voice switches. “She hold me down like gravity, we on the front page of them blogs. Would you be mad at me if the whole world knew the shit we was on?” Both of those people are Brent Faiyaz. He sounds different and you would think it wasn’t him, but it is. His voice gets deeper with a little fade to it. He also does all of the ad libbing.
In this song alone, Brent Faiyaz is singing in maybe four different pitches.
- His normal voice during the chorus. “You held me up when I was down and out”.
- His autotuned deep voice during the first verse. “Is you gon’ stress me out and cuss me out?”
- His voice rising during the ad libs. ” Superstar Status”
- His harmonizing during Tyler’s voice. ( All the “hmmms” and “yeahhs”.)
Sometimes you’d think it was a different person, but it’s important to point out that it is in fact Brent Faiyaz. What I’m trying to say is that this song is well crafted auditorily. It’s satisfying to the ears.
I don’t have a lot to say on Tyler’s behalf of the song. It was good, It sounded like him. It would’ve been nice to hear him sing along with his rapping verse, but he still sounded great. 10/10.
What I think made this song so popular amongst people was that Brent and Tyler were collabing to make this, the chorus is catchy and Brent sounds different throughout the song. It’s a good song, but it’s not Brent’s best, nor Tyler’s. Go give this song a listen and tell me what you think. I’d also like to know what you thought of the instrumental.
Next week’s song is TBA. Until then!
